Morris was one of my earlier black and white pieces. I created Morris after I created my "Three In One" mask series. I had an idea to do a follow-up but in black and white. Doing Morris in black and white allowed me to create the drama I wanted to bring out by focusing on tones and forms rather than colors. There are numerous layers to this piece, from the texture of the background to the cubism on the bottom and the uniqueness of each face. Morris is strong and this piece allowed me to mimic the appearance of a stone sculpture in my painting.
In my black and white collection, I decided to set aside the color spectrum and focus on the visual power that black and white can create. Doing these pieces in black and white allows my viewers to focus on the beauty and emotions of each face. This was a very freeing experience for me as I did not have to focus on mixing colors but more on forms and create drama as I played with extreme lights and darks. The differences in each face show that beauty comes in many different shapes and forms.
